Plague Tapes #68

Maybe 68 is a lucky number in this universe, but either way, for the first time in a long time, we have some good news, so we could not wait to tell you.  That, and the removal of Trump, are cause for an early show with some good music, and some news about the good news of the 90% effective vaccine.     Remember the land that brought us Trump also brought us Woody Guthrie – and there is a light that never goes out, and perhaps a way forward out of the cycles of lockdown, lifting restrictions, more lockdown…

News:  Andrew brings us the exciting news about the Pfizer vaccine which was out there being tested in the USA, where the cases went over 100,000 a day in the run up to the election. Therefore, when over 64 people had contacted the virus / and in fact 94 people had been exposed, they could unblind the test, and it showed 90% effectiviness.   This is a messenger RNA vaccine, and I didn’t entirely get it, but Andrew explains that it works differently to the standard vaccine, like the flu.   When the cases get up to 164 – they’ll have a better idea how well this vaccine is doing.   There is an issue where it appears that people don’t show symptoms, and 18/20% are asymptomatic, anyway with Covid19.  So this might pose a problem going foward.  The Medina vaccine should soon be declaring and we expect to hear from the Astra Zeneca one in Oxford, perhaps in December.

At home, the cases continue to decrease.  We should be aware that people appeared to heed NEPHT, and go into Level5 earlier than instuctued by this government.   We have a 5 day case average of 444. Positivity at around 3.9% but there is still concerns as in NI there is no signs of improvement.  267 per 100k in Mid Ulster, and Donegal is out worst county and that is at 153, and after that Limerick with 101.  So we need to start co-operation in a real and meaningful way in battling the virus.
