GOTW Plague Tapes #66

Friday 30th October 21.00hrs

Plague Tapes #66 66 a significant number in the history of rock and roll.  One of them magical numbers.  We start with a reading from one of the seminal texts of Rock & Roll, Disorder from Joy Division.  I heard of this band via my cousin who learned about it via the older punks in Drogheda. Unknown pleasures was a foundational LP and defined what a band should sound like, a dark and twisted sound which flowed from the underground of the colour velvet, and linked it with the tight industrial kick of post punk. This takes us on a journey towards jungle, detroit, and news from the Captain.   Musings and good music follow, and we get the news at the end, with Andrew who has been following all things Covid 19 related as we end the first week of level 5 lockdown.

News:  Andrew tells us we appear to be about to plateau out of the high point of the second wave, surge 2.  It appears that cases are decreasing, because people paid attention to NPHET when they were asking for level 5 three weeks ago, and changed their behaviour appropriately.  Then, when it was obvious that the public wanted that, the ‘populists’ in Govt. Followed suit, two weeks later.   Case both here and in the North are hovering over 800’s (Republic, 837, NI, 822) and positivity is coming down here to just over 5%.  R is probably a little less than 1.  Andrew explains the maths in this section – and walks us through the IFR, Infection Fatality Rates, and tells us of a looper in CA trying to manufacture small results, so that we can keep the econonomy open for the making of profits.  The ratlickers are out there worried that we did not need to go into L5 lockdown, but they’ll always be complaining because they care about nothing except making mammom, and how many people die, young or old, means nothing to them.    We need to learn from Wave 2.  Oscar Wilde said ‘ Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes.’ I really hope we do learn from our experience.
