Groove on the Wireless Volume 2 – show 56
CAN & Damo Suzuki. There is a story that goes, that Rock was bloated, pompous and expanding in it’s ordinariness, whilst dissappearing into it’s own egotistical black hole, and punk came along and were the maggots on that corpse. But there was a band, a rock band, in West Germany who were making rock music that didn’t deserve to die, and when they were joined by the wandering vagabond performer known as Damo Suzuki [who’d hung out in Wexford in the late 60’s, perhaps picking up his first name?] they created 3 amazing albums. That was CAN, and I came to ther music in the late 90’s but can you imagine what it must’ve been like to listen to Tago Mago in 1971. These were the records that you wanted your older brother to find and bring back to the house, or your uncle. Whoever was listening to CAN in the early 70’s was miles ahead of the curve and it would take generations after punk to catch up. So in a wholly inadequate way, with slightly more than an hour, I’m going to give you some of the greatness from 1970-73. Thank you CAN and thank you Damo for this peak at the future when we most needed it.
