A wet July followed by a wet August, and there is a melancholic air to the set, which I couldn’t work out, but then I found my way to a song by Sinead, and realised she’d been ghosting into that mix from the get go.

A sunny Sunday afternoon, in Groovetown studios and we start with one of the greatest bluesmen, Howlin Wolf, and that brings us to ZZ Top and and Beatles with the bluesy funk of Billy Preston on keys. Then Fela Kuti has been on our mind for a while, and we follow the beat and the Rhythm of Afrobeat, till we conlude that Rhytham is indeed a mystery.

The theme is feeling alien, not fitting in.Mentioned in the track 2 of this show, Earthlings by Anteloper, it’s been a constant theme in music, and especially the music that’s been influential in Dr. Groove’s life, from Bowie to Radiohead. We all love the aliens, and feel like outsiders from the pack, who follow convention and slip into ‘group think’ so easily.Nobody knows how to live, so we have to figure it out for ourselves, and if you get lost sometimes, talk to your friends, and you’ll figure it out.Unconventional, is as good a description of the music, as any other, file under; @lternative.

Dr. Groove, likes the number 23, one of his favourites, and not really sure why, beyond the fact that it’s prime. The message is that 22 was tough, and we’re all still finding it tough, into this new year, but keep it moving, you have to do that, go forward without fear, that’s how you keep balance, like riding a bike. Here’s a selection of tunes cobbled together as always for your enjoyment.

Sunday morning – it was when I felt inspried to record the music part, after watching the Velvet Underground documentary by Todd Haynes. The real birth of rock, or punk rock, definitely not the flowers in your hair clear shakra type.Such a great sound – in the chaos the driving rhythms, you better run run run…Later listen out of Howlin’ Wolf complain about someboby being in his home, isn’t that what the plague is all about, this invading sickness into our lives.
News Andrew is here to tell us about the new super villain on the plague scene, Omicron.Just as you thought life couldn’t get any more like a dystopian science fiction novel, along comes Omicron. We think it’s here, 11 possible cases here, 9 in Scotland yesterday, and we kind of already know that we have stong supicions that it is already here. The Netherlands found it on the 23rd.We learn about how Variants come about, and there have been 1500 lineages since the original Sars Cov-2.
Everything else contines on like before, cases bumping along at 4,000, and 14% positivity, and ICU with 122 in there as of yesterday. The pattern remains the same in terms of 60% of people in there being non-vaccinated. We have a one press conference -> from the HSE on Thursdays and after that we hear nothing from NPHET.
New music in this show from the amazing inspiring Little Simz. We leave the best wine till last with two tracks from the new Low album which has harmony and distortion all in one, for me it seldom gets any better. So listen out for that.In the news it looks like we are finally coming to the end of this long run of Plague Tapes…
Hey What – Low Album Cover
News: Andrew tells us that the ‘Emergency’ is over.So he has called it, and gives us details in relation to the fact that we have over 90% of the Adult population and we continue to eat into the unvaccinated population, 440,000 elegible to be vaccinated and we vaccinated 18,847 of them which is 4.3%.So these are all important – because this is the easy route to immunity. We are the highest adult population which is fully vaccinated in Europe and we are still higher up there with the incidence of the virus.5 day case average 1320.

With so many now passing it is hard to stay optimistic. LEE ‘SCRATCH’ PERRY’S death last week at the age of 85 was particularly hard to take. In future programmes I’ll try to ‘scratch’ the surface of his career playing the occasional gem. This edition of O Vibes opens with the Upsetter and follows with a slew of tracks from a range of other artists. For more information please go to https://dj-iano.blogspot.com
