Night Falls in D7 and Dr. Groove and his stylish cat, Pancho find themselves in the spare room, box room, office, Groovetown studios, working on the latest radio show. It’s too cold for June and the music went in a direction of warm places, Jamaica, Georgia, New Orleans, San Francisco, back to Louisiana, then New York, and we pop across the Hudson to end up in Hoboken. All these places are warm in June, one would imagine, but not so for Dr. Groove and Pancho.
I left one place out – Wisconsin – where Bon Iver recorded the second eponymous album – but I bet that is warm too even if the phrase means ‘good winter’.

It’s been an interesting week for sure. I got to read a couple of fanzines, Positive Creed and Suspect device – both reviewed <a href="culturie.wordpress.com? here I attended Dublin Council of Trade Unions AGm where there was not enough discussion on the relevance of the trade union movement in Ireland and beyond. I atteded a rally in support of the Paris Bakery Workers. These people are accumutaviley owed €66,000 in unpaid wages and their bosses have just walked away, not gone bankrpt or insolvent, just awol. It shows the value of a trade union as I’m sure it wouldn’t have gotten to this point if trade unions were involved. They weren’t and it hasn’t so the workers need all the support they can get.
I went to see Jimmy’s Hall on the warmest day of the year so far. it is a great film and a sign that we can build our dreams but need resolve to keep them alive.
Of course there is music in there everywhere and for me the week is all about the new Bear Trade record. PLEASE listen to it. Magic.
It is a show about slowing down songs and going with that sound. Doctor Groove got this idea into his head, to play a few songs that are famous for being slowed down, or dragged. We are talking about DJ Screws version of the Phil Collins classic. Then off to Nigeria with Fela Kuti, and end up back in the Virginian mountains with Dolly slowed down pleading with Jolene to leave her man alone.
Finally we speed up at the end and get all electric. The first song is for the workers in the Paris Bakery who are fighting to get paid from their bosses the wages that they are owed. Justice is something that obviously has to be fought for in 21st century Ireland. Give them your support.
