    In the latest episode of the Lockout podcast series we look at the development of new unionism at the turn of the 20th century. This was the trade unionism of Connolly and Larkin(“Larkinism”), focused on unskilled workers, that had its roots in the radical working-class struggles of Britain and America. We profile Cork-born American labour leader Mother Jones who was one of the eras most famous trade unionists and a cofounder of the Industrial Workers of the World.

    Before it reached Dublin in 1913 new unionism had swept across the island of Ireland. The podcast takes a look at the 1907 Belfast dock strike – a cross community struggle of Catholic and Protestant workers – and interviews NUI Galway labour historian Dr. John Cunningham about some of the other flashpoints in the south – Wexford in 1911, the Galway lockout of 1912 and Sligo in early 1913.

    We conclude by discussing why it is important to see the 1913 Lockout in Dublin in its context, as part of a new international wave of militancy and organisation among workers in the western world. What is the relevance of new unionism for us in 2013? While there are many differences there are also similarities – the rise in unemployment and casual labour; the ossification and decline of trade unions; the need for a reinvigorated mass movement of workers to fight back against bosses.

    We leave off where the next and final 1913 Unfinished Business podcast will pick up – how can workers organise today to meet the challenges we face?

    This week it was all about ‘rescuing’ aryan children from their parents.  Wow! What is this place getting like, 1930’s Berlin?

     

    Music wise Doctor Groove cannot believe he got to show 51 before introducing you to the wonderful sound of CAN.  Here they commence our journey with the sound taken from them at the very start of their journey with the incomparable Malcolm Moody (artist / sculpture) who disappeared away back to the states in 1970 and ended up as a lecturer in some University in Canada.  CAN are really 1.01 for great music, the foundation course.

    We go on into subtle sweet sounds from George Maple and end up with a boogie waltz, but watch out for Red Wing by Fuck buttons.  I loved those guys when I saw them in a field on a cold night this June.

    In connection to the two-day academic symposium at UCD on “World-Ecology, World-Economy, World-Literature,” this cultural evening in Dublin city centre will explore artistic representations of the intertwined themes of environmental and economic crisis. It will feature an exhibition of activist-photography on  social and political responses to economic and ecological crisis in post-Tiger Ireland. The exhibition launch and wine reception in the James Joyce St. Gallery will be followed by two readings in the Foley St. LAB from performance poet Dave Lordan, author of Invitation to a Sacrifice and First Book of Frags, and Mike McCormack,  award-winning novelist and author of Late Forensic Songs. McCormack and Lordan’s work is acutely attuned to the challenges of contemporary life in recession-Ireland, whether from the perspective of the urban environment in Dublin, or of the rural environments of the western coast.

    6 PM Wine Reception and Launch of Exhibition of Activist Photography, in the James Joyce St. Gallery.  Featuring the work of Andrew Flood, William Hederman, Aileen O’Carroll and Paul Reynolds.

    7 PM Readings and Q& A with Mike McCormack and Dave Lordan, in The Lab, Foley St. (just a few doors down from The Gallery)

    The Crowbar in Groningen was recently slapped with two hefty fines for playing live music.  The Crowbar brings something important and exciting to the local artistic and cultural landscape and attracts a fantastic variety of people.  It is an asset to the city of Groningen and should be treated as such.  This show is dedicated to supporting the Crowbar.

    How else could you possibly start this show if not with Breaking the Law from Fleas and Lice? It works on so many levels.  Next up is the first tune I played the first time I was in the Crowbar and was given access to the stereo.  This is an unreleased version of one of the first Moutpiece songs we ever learned.  Of course Nobby Noxious and the Impregnators are next because the whole reason I was ever in the Crowbar was because we were on tour with them (and they were great) .Next up its 3 bands who have played the Crowbar and been filmed doing it by Crowbarpunx:  De Fuckups, Insomnio, The Brutal Knights.  Brimstone Howl were the first band to ever play the Crowbar and then its a bit of Jack Oblivian.   Green Hornet are playing tomorrow night with Harlon T. Bobo for the Benefit gig so they both get played.   Next it’s two bands that played Nathalie’s birthday a couple of years ago The Red Dons and Victims and then it’s on to  The Restarts and Found on the Floor.  The New Bomb Turks never played the Crowbar and The Hex Dispensers haven’t either, but Eric Davison DJ’ed an after party there and The HD had a before and after party there last time they played The Vera. Lover! are up next and then it’s  Tumblin Gogo’s who are playing the next Crowbar benefit in November.  The last two are both bands who’s members played solo-ish gigs in the Crowbar.  First Steve Lake’s  Zounds and last Kepi Ghoulie’s  Groovy Ghoulies.  That’s about all there is time for.
